Cardio Renal Syndrome

Abstract

For a long time, physicians have recognized that the kidney and the heart are related especially when there is severe dysfunction of either of them. Dysfunction of one of these organs seldom occurs in isolation. Of late the Cardio renal syndrome is assuming significance because of its increasing incidence, awareness and complications. There is no definite definition of the Cardio renal syndrome. However, an attempted definition states that it is a “decline in renal function in the setting of advanced heart failureâ€. This definition does not cover the whole gamut of the cardio renal syndrome. Cardiac diseases are associated independently with a decrease in renal function and progression of existing renal disease. Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events and outcome. This bidirectional nature of cardiac and renal interaction is called Cardio Renal Syndrome (CRS).
