Joint replacement surgeries are being regularly performed successfully at the Baby Memorial Hospital. We have over 10 years follow-up of such patients including bilateral hip and knee joints operated for varied ailments such as Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Incidentally about 8 years back in association with Rotarian ( Late) Dr. Jayaram Menon and Baby Memorial Hospital Chairman, Dr K G Alexander, and Prof. N J Mani, MS, M.Ch. Ortho ( Liverpool) Chief of the Orthopedics department, BMH, took off as a joint venture offering free ‘joints’ for the needy in Kerala. Every year 8-10 patients are given such free implants. However due to the untimely death of Dr Jayaram Menon this year, we had to have a Memorial CME in his name.
Dr Thottappilli Jayaram Menon was born in Irinjalakuda. He was a lead consultant in Orthopedic surgery at Ormskirk and Southport Hospital, United Kingdom. Initially he mobilized a team of surgeons from UK and the implants were sponsored by him. Subsequently, the Rotary club of Southportlink, UK, got associated with this venture and the funds raised were channeled through the Rotary Club of Calicut Central. The last session of this joint venture was held on 19th and 20th of August 2006. This year we demonstrated Computer Navigated total knee replacement and Uniconylar Knee, both of which highlights the emerging surgeries and techniques in this field.
Many eminent International faculty have participated in this project in the past.
