Hypokalemia myopathy due to Piperacillin-tazobactam induced resistant hypokalemia
Abstract
Piperacillin-tazobactam (P-T) can be used for the treatment of polymicrobial infections, including intra-abdominal, skin and soft-tissue, and lower respiratory tract infections. Hypokalemia is an uncommon side effect of P-T. This is the case of an elderly lady who was given P-T for lower limb cellulitis, and developed hypokalemia, which was resistant to oral and intravenous potassium correction. Her potassium levels got corrected only after stoppage of P-T.
